A DAP MP has questioned whythe Government cannot combat illegal betting when he himself can get his hands on information relating to bookies, including their telephone numbers and bank accounts.
Er Teck Hwa (DAP - Bakri) even claimed that one of the illegal betting operations was carried out from a high-end shopping mall in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.
"The bookies also operate in Sitiawan in Perak. Bahau in Negri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur." he said when debating the loth Malaysia Plan. giving a list of names he claimed were "bookies" and their websites.
Er also asked why the relevant ministries could not nail the bookies.
Asked by Datuk Yusoff Mahal (BN - Labuan) if he had lodged a police report and whether he would be willing to step forward, Er said, as an MP. he would offer himself as a witness.
Anthony Loke Siew Fook (DAP - Rasah) said no Chinese community leader had asked for sports betting to be legalised.
adding that during their debateseveral backbenchers had made it seem that the proposal was merely to fulfill their need to gamble.
He said the Chinese community did not want gambling licences but more equal opportunities, recognition of Chinese university degrees, scholarships and development of new villages.
